Search Engine Marketing Tutorial - Examples & Worksheet

If you haven't done it already, it's time to put all of your research into a worksheet.
The best way to approach this is to create a document in Word, Notepad or your favorite text editor with all the relevant info you will need to submit to the search engines and directories. This info will be the accumulation of all your preparation work. You will need to access it frequently when submitting to the search engines so keep it open and running in the background when submitting. Here's a check list.

  1. Your most relevant Targeted keyword phrases (remember, more is NOT better).
  2. Your concise description in approximately 25 words (150-190 characters including spaces) or less (cannot stress the importance of this enough).
  3. Keyword phrases for page titles (one phrase per page title is best but you can go with two if you must).
  4. Keyword phrases added to your copy in a logical manner.
  5. Meta Description and Meta Keywords

Please review the following rules and examples.

Keyword Rules & Examples:
Keywords should be in lowercase and separated by commas. Do not repeat the same word more than three times. Keep this to 255 characters or less (not words).
(We will use a Fictional Company company called Engineering USA for these examples.)

Good Example: (contains 198 characters)

engineering usa, engineering consultants, fitness for service, risk based inspection, api 579, failure analysis, pressure relief, litigation support, material selection, corrosion consulting

Bad Example:

Engineering, Engineering Consultants, Engineering Firm, Engineering Company, The Best Engineers, Engineering, Engineering and Consulting, Engineering & Consulting, Engineering Business, Houston Based Engineering Firm, Engineering company in Houston Texas

Description Rules & Examples:
Descriptions must be concise, objective and written in approximately 25 words or less. (This varies with the different directories so be prepared to modify it slightly to 150 -190 characters) Do not include your site name or company name in the description.

Good Example:

Specializes in fixed equipment support services for the refining, petrochemical, pulp, and paper industries. Services include risk-based inspection and engineering standard adherence consulting.

It would appear in Yahoo! like this:

Engineering USA - specializes in fixed equipment support services for the refining, petrochemical, pulp, and paper industries. Services include risk-based inspection and engineering standard adherence consulting.

Bad Example:

Engineering USA offers the best engineering services available in the USA! Our Full time engineers are equipped to handle all of your engineering needs! CALL US TODAY for the best rates and services!

It could appear in Yahoo! and other directories like this:

Engineering USA

The editors could leave off the description entirely or write one for you that is not representative of your company that doesn't have important keyword phrases in it. Don't let this happen!

Title Rules and examples:
It is best to use one keyword phrase per title (the title shows up in the browser at the very top of the window)

Some Good Examples:

Home page title: Engineering consultants
About Us title: Fitness for Service
Services title: Risk Based Inspection
Products title: Engineering software

Some Poor Examples:

Home page title: Engineering USA - Home page
About Us title: Engineering USA - About us
Services title: Engineering USA - Services
Products title: Engineering USA - Products

This is what your Worksheet should look like now.
